Skin oils – which to choose and how to use them

When we say skin oil, our minds ignore its adjective. We simply imagine oil as an oily liquid, which naturally gives rise to the idea of oily skin. This is appreciated by those whose skin is naturally dry or tends to get dry or develop dry patches. For combination, oily, or acne-prone skin, oils naturally evoke a “no go!” approach.

Lovers of skin oils usually know which ones are suitable for their skin and how to use them. Detractors have just come across products that didn’t suit their skin. Simply put, the properties of different oils have different benefits or, conversely, adverse effects on the skin. If you are one of them, try to give them another chance.

How to choose?

  1. Identify your skin properly. Skin type is determined by the production of sebum. Your goal is to bring harmony to your skin, i.e., to maintain a balance of sebum production.

The general classifications are clear: normal, dry, combination, oily, acne-prone, and sensitive, but it’s not a rule that you’ll categorize your skin into one group.

  1. Depending on your skin type, choose the right products and practices to take care of it.

Types of oils according to skin type:

Jojoba oil is ideal for oily, combination, and sensitive skin. Its formula is similar to human sebum, which helps regulate the skin’s natural oil production. It is lightweight, absorbs quickly, and does not clog pores. It has anti-inflammatory properties, making it a great choice for acne-prone skin.

Argan oil is suitable for dry, normal, and combination skin. It is rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids, which gives oil its powerful moisturizing and regenerating benefits. It helps nourish and soothe dry skin and improves elasticity.

Avocado oil is rich in vitamins A, D, and E and essential fatty acids. It is a powerful moisturizing oil that helps skin regeneration and soothes irritation. It is ideal for dry and sensitive skin that needs nourishment and protection.

Rose oil is appreciated by dry, mature, sensitive, and problematic skin. It is rich in vitamins A (retinoids) and C, which promote cell regeneration and improve the appearance of scars and pigmentation. This oil is light and easily absorbed.

Castor oil has strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, making it a good choice for problematic skin. It is also used as part of oil cleansing, which helps to loosen impurities and sebum in the pores.

Grapeseed oil, which is very light, non-greasy, and rich in antioxidants, including vitamin E, helps to soothe and balance the skin without clogging pores. It also has tightening effects that can help minimize the appearance of pores. It is suitable for oily, combination, and acne-prone skin.

Olive oil is rich in antioxidants and vitamins A, and E. It is an excellent moisturizer that protects the skin from dehydration. It can be heavier, so it’s recommended more for drier skin types.

What to look out for when choosing?

Be sure to look for the right ingredients, ideally 100% oils. Oil is naturally a preservative so you don’t need to worry about it containing chemicals. Store in a dark and dry place to preserve their original properties.

The best is the cold-pressed ones, in which maximum amounts of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, enzymes, and their bioactive components are preserved.

Good oils do not have a strong scent, no added perfumes, these do not belong in facials, they will unnecessarily weigh down your skin and reduce the effectiveness of the oil’s benefits.

How to apply the facial oil?

In your daily routine, oils are a great evening skin care treatment, after exfoliating and cleansing. The skin you apply the oil to should always be moist. This is mainly because the oil will help lock in moisture and create a protective skin barrier that prevents loss of hydration. You can apply the oil along with your moisturizer by adding a few drops directly into the cream.

The oils help the skin to regenerate and moisturize overnight. If you use active ingredients like retinol or acids, apply the oil as a last step to calm your skin.

They’re also ideal for a facial massage, which improves circulation and promotes skin elasticity. Use the pure oil as a slip base for a gentle massage.

A favorite truth, the same as our Eyelash Spacelash Serum “Less is More”: just a few drops all over your face. Applying too much leads to clogged pores, and that’s the nightmare of all selfies!
